Innovative Tourism Collaboration
v. 09/03/08

Background

At the 2008 Michigan Tourism Conference held in Grand Rapids, the Michigan Travel Commission announced that a new set of industry awards recognizing innovative tourism collaborations would have their inaugural presentation during a special awards ceremony at the 2009 Michigan Tourism Conference. During her address at the 2008 conference, Governor Granholm agreed to name this new set of awards the “Governor’s Awards for Innovative Tourism Collaboration” to help elevate the status of Michigan’s tourism industry, to signal the Office of the Governor’s continued involvement and support, and to promote innovative collaboration as an effective, efficient and creative operating principle for the industry.

Award Categories

A Governor’s Award for Innovative Tourism Collaboration will be presented to nominated and selected collaborations of organizations in each of the following four categories.

Tourism Marketing / Promotion

Awarded to two or more organizations that have worked together to create an innovative marketing initiative designed to mutually benefit the partners, serve the community and bring positive attention to the Michigan travel industry. These partnerships may be comprised of travel industry members such as CVB’s, attractions and destinations or non-traditional partners such as retailers, governmental entities and other non-travel related industries.

Eligibility:

Nominees must be non-profit or for-profit, private sector or public sector, organizations, agencies or entities that are part of an innovative Michigan tourism marketing or promotion partnership or collaboration. All tourism sectors are eligible for this award, including hybrid or blended sector collaborations. At least one of the collaborators/partners must be based in Michigan.

Nominating Criteria:
Nominations must demonstrate that the nominees…

• Were able to achieve something of significance through collaboration that they could not have achieved on their own.

• Had addressed a tourism marketing or promotion challenge or opportunity in a new and innovative way.

• Learned something new, significant and useful from the collaboration and has, or will, share that acquired knowledge with a wider tourism industry audience.

• Have “succeeded” via the collaboration when judged against a “success metric” that is self-identified and described in the nomination.

Tourism Education / Training

Awarded to a collaboration for its efforts to educate or offer training to the tourism industry to elevate levels of customer service/hospitality, achieve economic success, or encourage non-traditional training partnerships or opportunities.

Eligibility:

Nominees must be non-profit or for-profit, private sector or public sector, organizations, agencies or entities that are part of an innovative tourism education or training partnership or collaboration. All tourism sectors are eligible for this award, including hybrid or blended sector collaborations. At least one of the collaborators/partners must be based in Michigan.

Nominating Criteria:
Nominations must demonstrate that the nominees…

• Were able to achieve one or more specific tourism or hospitality educational or training objectives solely or principally because of the collaboration.

• Had addressed an education or training opportunity or challenge in a new and innovative way.

• Learned something new, significant and useful from the collaboration and has, or will, share that acquired knowledge with a wider tourism industry audience.

• Have “succeeded” via the collaboration when judged against a “success metric” that is self-identified and described in the nomination.

Tourism Experience Presentation

Awarded to a collaboration in recognition of its success in developing and/or presenting an innovative, memorable and highly valued tourism experience.

Eligibility:

Nominees must be non-profit or for-profit, private sector or public sector, organizations, agencies or entities that have partnered or collaborated to develop or present an innovative Michigan tourism experience. All tourism sectors are eligible for this award, including hybrid or blended sector collaborations. At least one of the collaborators/partners must be based in Michigan.

Nominating Criteria:
Nominations must demonstrate that the nominees…

• Through innovative collaboration, have made a significant contribution to the inventory of compelling Michigan tourism experiences.

• Through innovative collaboration, have created either a whole new Michigan tourism experience, or re-presented an existing tourism experience in a new, innovative and compelling way, thereby adding to the uniqueness of Michigan’s tourism product.

• Learned something new, significant and useful from the collaboration and has, or will, share that acquired knowledge with a wider tourism industry audience.

• Have “succeeded” via the collaboration when judged against a “success metric” that is self-identified and described in the nomination.

Non-Traditional Tourism Partnerships / Collaborations

Awarded to an innovative collaboration among organizations/entities that have not typically or traditionally worked together, but through the collaboration has contributed in some significant and measurable way to Michigan’s tourism industry or to one or more specific Michigan tourism interests.

Eligibility:

Nominees must be non-profit or for-profit, private sector or public sector, organizations, agencies or entities that have not traditionally partnered or collaborated to advance a Michigan tourism interest. At least one of the collaborators/partners must be based in Michigan.

• Were able to look beyond “the likely suspects” in forming an innovative tourism related collaboration or partnership.

• Through the collaboration, have helped expand an understanding of who can (and should) be a part of Michigan’s tourism industry.

• Learned something new, significant and useful from the collaboration and has, or will, share that acquired knowledge with a wider tourism industry audience.

• Have “succeeded” via the collaboration when judged against a “success metric” that is self-identified and described in the nomination.

Michigan Film Discussion Planned for November 5 in Charlevoix

(NORTHERN MICHIGAN | October 27, 2008) – Film producers from all over the United States are looking to Michigan as a prime venue for their upcoming projects, thanks to 40% tax incentives introduced back in April. Securing the projects is just half the battle, however. The success or failure of this program lies within the communities of Michigan who must be able to provide goods and services, with an unparalleled level of expertise, teamwork and communication.

On Wednesday, November 5, a group of concerned individuals with ties to the film industry – known collectively as the Northern Michigan Film & Media Group – is hosting an informational discussion geared toward chambers of commerce, visitor bureaus, economic development organizations, businesses and individuals interested in learning more about the incentives and the potential it provides for Michigan. The session will be held at Stafford’s Weathervane Restaurant in Charlevoix. A social hour for networking will start at 5pm, with a formal round-table discussion and Q&A session starting at 7pm.

Dianna Stampfler, President of Promote Michigan and a Board member of the West Michigan Film Video Alliance, will be the moderator for the evening’s discussion.

“Since the incentives were introduced, everyone is trying to capture a piece of the action and become an expert in the industry,” said Stampfler. “It’s important that Michigan’s businesses, organizations and communities work together to make this industry a viable part of our state’s future economic foundation. I invite anyone who is passionate about Michigan’s future and our growing film industry to attend this session to learn more.”

Some California industry executives have been invited to participate in the session, including George Colburn, a historian and filmmaker, with offices in Petoskey, New Mexico and Washington DC, who will be a featured panelist for the evening.

“It is critical that Northern Michigan start immediately to establish itself by organizing collaborative coalitions of communities, businesses and individuals to showcase their inventory of assets,” Colburn said. “By working together, northern Michigan can soon earn a preferential position with the film industry, and everyone involved can profit from the designation.”

As additional incentives for attendees, Stafford’s Weathervane Restaurant will be offering a dining special for those arriving prior to 7pm; special rates are being offered at the Weathervane Terrace Inn & Suites ($39 for a standard room or $59 for a Lake Michigan Suites).  For room reservations and special rates, call (231) 547-9955 and mention that you’re a film industry attendee.

For additional information about the November 5 event, contact (231) 535-2227.

Do you Youtube? Your campers do.

When is the last time you watched a Youtube video? I’m guessing, for most of us, the answer is “yesterday”. They are everywhere. We get them in our email, we watch them on our favorite websites, we even see television commercials urging us to go to Youtube and watch their video.

Want to learn woodcarving? Check out Banjoman15

Want to check out the latest Ford Trucks? Go to  FordandLincoln

Want to see how Youtube works for an Exterminator? Check out Hal Coleman’s Yucky, Nasty Bug Facts

Want a virtual tour of the local Funeral Home?

And…..what if you have an RV Park or Campground?

The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads

Shipshewana RV Park

Mayfair Campground

Go. Now. Get yourself a Youtube account. It’s free. Then use any camera you have. Even your cell phone will work. Create something to show your campers around your park. They’re much more likely to visit in person if they’ve had a look-see online. Don’t know how to upload and all that jazz? Call your sister’s kid. He’ll know how. Get one of your employees to help. They know how. Email me at tate@tatefishermarketing.com, I’ll talk you through it.

One more tip…put good tags and titles in when you upload. Enter the name of your park, the city and state you’re located in, outdoor pool, large rv sites, cabins and cottages, online reservations, (also list the url of your park), pig roasts, lakefront sites, kids activities, boating, fishing, anything you do that people might specifically be looking for.

Then, like you did with your Myspace page, put a link to your Youtube page on your website.

Hey, we’re moving right along; aren’t we? You can be behind the wheel of the online presence of your park. Next time we’ll probably talk about Flickr and what you can do with all those great park photos you have. You can put them to work for you and I’ll show you how.

Thanks for your time. Hope your phones are ringing off the hook.

Tate

Think Myspace is for teen girls-gone-wild? Think again.

myspace-logo.gif

I read recently that if Myspace were a country it would be the 14th largest in the world.

That’s a lot of people!!

It may not matter to you that millions of people are networking on Myspace but consider this…..many, many, many of them are campers.

We spend a lot of energy deciding what we can do to get more campers in our parks. I’m suggesting we flip that thought process a little and start asking where we can go to get campers?

Myspace is a great place to start.

Another option for you to consider is that you may not have to do a thing. You may already have a Myspace expert on staff. You could think about assigning one of your employees to create your Myspace profile and maintain it for you. I’m willing to bet you have someone on staff (probably several) who’s been managing their own Myspace profile for a long time. You may also be surprised to find that this employee is over 40!!!

Now I am not recommending that you just turn someone loose in creating and maintaining your profile. It is your responsibility to follow up regularly. Check the site. Have your employee keep you up to date with statistics and anything they’ve posted each week. You just won’t have to do the posting and friending and all that jazz. I know you’re busy. I also know that pre and post season can see some lag time for your staff. This is a great job to assign to that one employee who knows how and will help you get there.

Note: Myspace has a reputation for being a little spammy and can be a little vulgar. You have control over what shows up in your profile though and can hit “delete” without a second thought.

One more great reason to create a Myspace profile is that you’ll get a super-huge, fat and sassy backlink to your website. That just means that Google will notice that a high authority site *Myspace* is pointing to your website and Google will give you some love in return. You’ll show up in more places online. That can only be good. ***unless, of course, the police were involved ;-)

Here are a few links to some campground Myspace pages.

Myspace: Middle Creek Campground, Buchanan, VA

Myspace: Two Lakes Campground, Drummond, WI

Myspace: Cabin Creek Campground, Jacksonville, NC

Now. The next thing you need to do is put a link to your Myspace profile on your website. If you don’t know how to do it, let your webmaster do it for you. It’s a two minute job.

If you have any questions feel free to email me at tate@tatefishermarketing.com .  I’d love to help.

Next time we’ll talk about Youtube, having your own account and putting videos of your park on it. It’s a whole lot easier than it sounds. I’ll be writing again in a few days. Thanks for reading.

Michigan Tourism Industry Legislative Conference Canceled

Following is an email received from Steve Yencich, CAE, President/CEO, Michigan Lodging and Tourism Association regarding the postponement of the conference.

This is to inform you that the Tourism Industry Legislative Conference, originally set for next Wednesday, May 7th has been canceled and will be rescheduled for a date later this September.

Sometimes it’s best to listen to your customers….

As we made calls to promote attendance, some common themes emerged. This cancellation is due to low registration numbers which many told us were influenced by a variety of factors, including:

Proximity to “Driving Tourism 2008″ The Legislative Conference wouldv’e taken place just 3 weeks following our industry’s very successful “Driving Tourism 2008, ” an event which brought over 500 people to Grand Rapids. So much time away from the office, in so short a period of time can be a problem for many.

Arguably, people may be suffering from a little “legislative issue fatigue.” In the weeks leading up to the tourism conference we all worked very hard to pass legislation to increase promotion funding without tax or assessment increase. Thousands of faxes, phone calls and emails were generated to help pass SB 1223-25. A combined 100 people showed up to two separate House and Senate hearings to show support for that legislation. On the heels of all that grassroots effort, maybe it’s just time to catch our breaths…

Some may have felt that we’d already achieved a great deal of our goal. Even though it’s only temporary funding, $60 million is a lot of money, and it will take at least two years before it begins to dissapate. Others may have felt it was a bit premature to worry about a loss of funding that won’t take place until 2010.
But there were other factors that went into the decision to reschedule this event.

Politically, a small crowd sends the wrong message. Showing up at the Capitol for a industry-wide legislative conference with a small crowd probably does more damage than good. Imagine … if only a handful of people had showed up for those House and Senate hearings on promotion funding - chances are that it never would have passed at all.

Both of these events are designed to be big. One generates big attendance, the other is designed to generate a big impact. From a programmatic perspective, having two such major events in the same quarter really doesn’t make sense. Now is a logical time to provide some separation between these two major events.

Finally, It’s important to secure permanent tourism promotion funding in 2008. SB 690 provides permanent, dedicated funding for tourism promotion. Because the entire House is up for reelection and many current members are termed out - it’s crucial that we make a concerted effort to pass legislation this year. We spent a lot of time and effort educating legislators on the important role tourism plays in our state’s economy. It’s best that we work in an environment in which many House members already understand our issues.

So let’s feel good about our acheivements for a while, put what we have learned at “Driving Tourism 2008″ to use, and have a great summer! In the interim, we’ll be back to you with a special conference issue of “MI Lodging and Tourism Online” soon!
