Innovative Tourism Collaboration

Background

At the 2008 Michigan Tourism Conference held in Grand Rapids, the Michigan Travel Commission announced that a new set of industry awards recognizing innovative tourism collaborations would have their inaugural presentation during a special awards ceremony at the 2009 Michigan Tourism Conference. During her address at the 2008 conference, Governor Granholm agreed to name this new set of awards the “Governor’s Awards for Innovative Tourism Collaboration” to help elevate the status of Michigan’s tourism industry, to signal the Office of the Governor’s continued involvement and support, and to promote innovative collaboration as an effective, efficient and creative operating principle for the industry.

Award Categories

A Governor’s Award for Innovative Tourism Collaboration will be presented to nominated and selected collaborations of organizations in each of the following four categories.

Tourism Marketing / Promotion

Awarded to two or more organizations that have worked together to create an innovative marketing initiative designed to mutually benefit the partners, serve the community and bring positive attention to the Michigan travel industry. These partnerships may be comprised of travel industry members such as CVB’s, attractions and destinations or non-traditional partners such as retailers, governmental entities and other non-travel related industries.

Eligibility:

Nominees must be non-profit or for-profit, private sector or public sector, organizations, agencies or entities that are part of an innovative Michigan tourism marketing or promotion partnership or collaboration. All tourism sectors are eligible for this award, including hybrid or blended sector collaborations. At least one of the collaborators/partners must be based in Michigan.

Nominating Criteria:
Nominations must demonstrate that the nominees…

• Were able to achieve something of significance through collaboration that they could not have achieved on their own.

• Had addressed a tourism marketing or promotion challenge or opportunity in a new and innovative way.

• Learned something new, significant and useful from the collaboration and has, or will, share that acquired knowledge with a wider tourism industry audience.

• Have “succeeded” via the collaboration when judged against a “success metric” that is self-identified and described in the nomination.

Tourism Education / Training

Awarded to a collaboration for its efforts to educate or offer training to the tourism industry to elevate levels of customer service/hospitality, achieve economic success, or encourage non-traditional training partnerships or opportunities.

Eligibility:

Nominees must be non-profit or for-profit, private sector or public sector, organizations, agencies or entities that are part of an innovative tourism education or training partnership or collaboration. All tourism sectors are eligible for this award, including hybrid or blended sector collaborations. At least one of the collaborators/partners must be based in Michigan.

Nominating Criteria:
Nominations must demonstrate that the nominees…

• Were able to achieve one or more specific tourism or hospitality educational or training objectives solely or principally because of the collaboration.

• Had addressed an education or training opportunity or challenge in a new and innovative way.

• Learned something new, significant and useful from the collaboration and has, or will, share that acquired knowledge with a wider tourism industry audience.

• Have “succeeded” via the collaboration when judged against a “success metric” that is self-identified and described in the nomination.

Tourism Experience Presentation

Awarded to a collaboration in recognition of its success in developing and/or presenting an innovative, memorable and highly valued tourism experience.

Eligibility:

Nominees must be non-profit or for-profit, private sector or public sector, organizations, agencies or entities that have partnered or collaborated to develop or present an innovative Michigan tourism experience. All tourism sectors are eligible for this award, including hybrid or blended sector collaborations. At least one of the collaborators/partners must be based in Michigan.

Nominating Criteria:
Nominations must demonstrate that the nominees…

• Through innovative collaboration, have made a significant contribution to the inventory of compelling Michigan tourism experiences.

• Through innovative collaboration, have created either a whole new Michigan tourism experience, or re-presented an existing tourism experience in a new, innovative and compelling way, thereby adding to the uniqueness of Michigan’s tourism product.

• Learned something new, significant and useful from the collaboration and has, or will, share that acquired knowledge with a wider tourism industry audience.

• Have “succeeded” via the collaboration when judged against a “success metric” that is self-identified and described in the nomination.

Non-Traditional Tourism Partnerships / Collaborations

Awarded to an innovative collaboration among organizations/entities that have not typically or traditionally worked together, but through the collaboration has contributed in some significant and measurable way to Michigan’s tourism industry or to one or more specific Michigan tourism interests.

Eligibility:

Nominees must be non-profit or for-profit, private sector or public sector, organizations, agencies or entities that have not traditionally partnered or collaborated to advance a Michigan tourism interest. At least one of the collaborators/partners must be based in Michigan.

Nominating Criteria:
Nominations must demonstrate that the nominees…

• Were able to look beyond “the likely suspects” in forming an innovative tourism related collaboration or partnership.

• Through the collaboration, have helped expand an understanding of who can (and should) be a part of Michigan’s tourism industry.

• Learned something new, significant and useful from the collaboration and has, or will, share that acquired knowledge with a wider tourism industry audience.

• Have “succeeded” via the collaboration when judged against a “success metric” that is self-identified and described in the nomination.

Travel 2.0 Interactive, a national blog site, is holding an online contest for the best state tourism office website. There have been two rounds of voting already and Michigan (www.michigan.org) is now in the semifinals going head-to-head with Ohio.

10 Reasons to Love Spring Camping in Michigan

Although camping is a year-round activity in Michigan, spring signals the onset of the warm-weather season. By mid-April, a large number of the privately owned campgrounds in Michigan are welcoming guests looking to shake off the winter blues and enjoy the great outdoors.

Here are 10 great reasons to head out to your favorite Michigan campground this spring:

1. Wildflowers. April showers bring May flowers, like the trillium that blanket the forest floor. Harbor Springs hosts an annual Trillium Festival each spring, this year set for May 20-29. Spring also brings the blossoms on the apple and cherry trees, making this one of the most fragrant times of the year to get out and travel the Great Lakes State. The Blossomtime Festival (April 27-May 4) in St. Joseph/Benton Harbor and Blossom Days on Old Mission Peninsula (May 17-18) are two events not to be missed.

Of course when it comes to spring flowers, one can’t forget the annual Tulip Time Festival in Holland (May 3-10), it’s a sure sign of spring!

2. Woodland Edibles. Morel mushrooms, wild ramps, leeks and fiddleheads are all delicacies that can be found by foraging through the woodlands of Michigan. After a successful “hunt” you can savor these mouth-watering finds, paired with a fine Michigan beer or wine. Several cities throughout the state – including Mesick and Boyne City – have been hosting festivals celebrate the “mighty morel” for more than 40 years. 3. Fishing. Whether you enjoy fly fishing on the rivers and streams, heading out on a charter on the big lake or casting a line for pan fish in an inland lake, you’re sure to catch something while spring fishing in Michigan. From walleye, trout, steelhead and salmon to perch, bass and bluegills, this is a fisherman’s paradise. Spring is also a great to visit one of the state’s six fish hatcheries or the famed Fish Ladder in Grand Rapids. The National Trout Festival (April 23-27) in Kalkaska, the Freeland Walleye Festival (April 25-27) and the Mancelona Bass Festival (May 28-June 1) are among the many opportunities to enjoy spring fishing celebrations in Michigan.

4. Wine Tasting. While the 50+ wineries throughout the state of Michigan are open year round, spring is the ideal time to visit as this is when the new releases are available for tasting. Be sure to purchase a bottle or two, to pair with those woodland edibles and fresh catches! 5. Bird Watching. Nature centers, sanctuaries and wildlife viewing areas are thriving with opportunities for spring bird watching. The Whitefish Point Bird Observatory Annual Spring Fling (April 25-27) in Paradise, the Tawas Point Birding Festival (May 16-18) in Tawas and the Kirtland Warbler Festival (May 17) in Roscommon County are among the many spring birding events that you may want to check out this season. 6. Paddling. With thousands of miles of rivers and streams, not to mention the inland and Great Lakes, spring is the perfect time to get out in your canoe or kayak and head out on the water for some peace and quite. 7. Peddling. Michigan is home to some of the most scenic biking trails, ranging in distance and level of difficulty. 8. Hiking.
